Johnny Song, a lyric 'street-drama'

Johnny Song was originally given a rehearsed reading as part of the Warehouse Theatre's International Playwriting Festival, leading to a commission and full production.

"The Jesse James an' Billy The Kid of street poets/

Fastest verbals in town", Johnny Song

A fast-paced and lyrical odyssey through the sexed and slightly sinister streets of London

Johnny Song, a street poet, sets out with his partner in rhyme Drummer Boy on a journey through a hectic Saturday night, on to the early hours and morning light. Everyone they encounter hears Drummer Boy’s beats and the words of Johnny Song, as the two sonneteers distribute their gifts to the people of the capital.

JOHNNY SONG: “I’ve heard it said, the city’s on fire tonight:

Burning, burning in red and orange flame.

The flame licks its way across the river,

And sends its roar down every street

With a message of blood and pain.

And the message is this:

Tonight, London’s in darkness”.
