Jim has led and facilitated scriptwriting workshops for Britannia Village Youth Club, based in Royal Docks, East London. The Royal Docks has a high number of young people living in the ward and there is a high perception of crime and anti social behaviour in Britannia Village, in particular towards young people. There is also a marked lack of community cohesion between people that live in the apartments in Britannia Village and in housing association homes.
Through a series of drama workshops, exploring issues around identity, community and friendship, he devised a basic programme of playwriting exercises for youth club members which show them how to structure a play and write short, contemporary and challenging pieces for the stage on issues of concern to them, such as young people not having a voice within the community, or lack of meaningful opportunities for them to take part in the decision-making process.
